Caitlin Clark appeared to have a heated discussion with Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides in the closing stages of their defeat to Chicago Sky on Sunday night. However, amid fan concern, she poured water on concerns of a rift in the Fever’s postgame press conference.
The Fever were beaten 88-87 in a gutting loss for Clark, as the Sky finally got their first WNBA win against Indiana this season at the third time of asking. A fourth-quarter collapse from the Fever was compounded by an apparent disagreement between Clark and Sides on the touchline, as the guard barely shot the ball down the stretch despite playing a phenomenal floor game until virtually disappearing in the final minutes.
The No. 1 draft pick only took two shots in the final seven minutes of the game. Clark and Sides were later spotted at the end of the fourth quarter involved in what looked like a tense discussion. Sides was seen talking to Clark and other Fever players before the former Iowa college star frustratingly gestured with her hands.
Clark looked dismissive at whatever Sides had said to her and answered back to the coach, who seemed to react in a defensive manner by holding her hands up and calmly carrying on the conversation with Clark. However, the star point guard dropped her head back and wafted her hands in exasperation.
Despite the criticism aimed towards her performance and Sides’ tactics from fans watching from home, Clark defended her play as she recorded a franchise-high 13 assists. “I’m sure there was an opportunity or two for me to probably attempt another shot there at the end but I trust my teammates,” Clark said in her postgame press conference. “Obviously 13 assists, that means my teammates score off 13 of my passes, it’s a really great number so I’m going to give them the ball every time and give them the opportunity to score.

“I believe in them and obviously Kelse (Kelsey Mitchell) had a good game, I thought AB (Aliyah Boston) was really good, I thought we were really good on the ball screen action from three quarters and then we struggled to even get to it. It wasn’t our offense, our offense is never a problem, we scored 87 points and we really executed that fourth quarter, we just foul – we have to stop fouling.”
Alongside many watching on, Sides appeared to also question why Clark reframed from taking more shots in the closing stages in her postgame press conference. “I never want her to not be aggressive and take shots,” she said before referencing one play in the fourth quarter. “I thought she was going to take it to the rim or pull up right. That would have been a great shot for her and for our team.”
