Fans of The Princess Diaries have been manifesting a third movie into existence for years, and it’s finally happening. Yes, folks, The Princess Diaries 3 is confirmed.

On November 15, The Hollywood Reporter announced that The Princess Diaries 3 was officially in the works at Disney. Deadline has since also confirmed the news with the company. The forthcoming movie will follow 2001’s The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, both directed by the late Garry Marshall.

Details about the long-anticipated threequel are being kept under wraps, but we do know Aadrita Mukerji is writing the script. (For reference: the first movie was written by Gina Wendkos, while the second tapped Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder creator Shonda Rhimes). In addition, Debra Martin Chase, who already worked on the first two films, will return as an executive producer, this time with Melissa K. Stack. (Fun fact in case you didn’t know: thee Whitney Houston was also a producer for the first two films alongside Debra!)

However, not everything is good news. As Variety notes, both Anne Hathaway’s and Julie Andrews’s involvement in the film is still up in the air. While we still don’t know whether the two will be reprising their beloved roles as Mia Thermopolis and Queen Clarisse Renaldi, respectively, we know that Hathaway was game not that long ago.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in October 2022, Anne admitted she “would more than entertain” the idea of a threequel. “I’m pulling for it,” she added. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.” Sequel star Raven-Symoné already echoed Anne’s words back in 2017, and lest we forget that Meg Cabot, the author of the original Princess Diaries book series, also teased the third film that same year. Now, who do we need to call at Disney to get these confirmations?!
