How many points did Angel Reese score tonight?
Reese played her second and final preseason game of the 2024 season against the Liberty, who finished the 2023 season as the runners-up to the Aces in the WNBA Finals. The Sky dominated wire to wire, finishing with a resounding 101-53 victory.
That’s an absurd margin of victory for Chicago considering how talented the New York roster is, but it’s still the preseason. Many teams use these games as an opportunity to figure out their final roster cuts. The Liberty played 14 players, 11 of which had at least 10 minutes on the floor — and they need to get down to the league maximum of 12 by next week.
Reese did still go up against New York’s elite frontcourt pairing of Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones. The Sky rookie posted 13 points and five rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting. Her accuracy represented an improvement from her debut game, in which she had 13 points and nine rebounds on 2-of-8 shooting from the floor.
The Sky were without Cardoso tonight, who will be sidelined for four to six weeks with a shoulder injury she sustained in the Sky’s preseason opener last Friday, May 3.
A handful of Chicago Bears players attended the preseason bout. Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze, two top 10 selections in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as trade acquisition Keenan Allen sat courtside.
Bulls guard Coby White was there supporting the Sky, too.
Reese has garnered attention over the past 24 hours for more than her on-court play. She starred at the Met Gala Monday night, noting that she’s “maximizing [her] 24 hours.”
WNBA League Pass controversy, explained
While the Sky-Liberty match went smoothly, including on the WNBA League Pass streaming service, the Sky’s preseason opener had a major issue regarding the service.
The WNBA app incorrectly listed all preseason games on Friday, May 3, as available to stream via League Pass. Instead, only Clark’s debut for the Fever was on offer. The league apologized on X for the mistake, but fans voiced their displeasure on social media.
Reese’s preseason debut also came on May 3, with many fans looking forward to watching the former LSU star. Without an official WNBA stream, fans instead found a fan account streaming the game for free on X, with viewership of the stream reaching 434,000 as of Saturday.
After the uproar, WNBA made Reese’s second preseason game free to watch on the app.
Aside from not making Reese’s game available, onlookers — including USA Today’s Nancy Armour — criticized the league for not being prepared to take on the massive growth its expecting.
