Prince William has been praised for taking a huge step that risks setting himself up for failure – and his late mum Princess Diana must take a lot of the credit for it
Prince William has been making waves with his new initiative and is showing “bravery” by running the risk of setting himself up for failure – and his late mum should take a lot of the credit for the man he has become.
That’s according to a Royal expert, who said his project Homewards, which aims to tackle the UK’s homelessness crisis, is a bold move for Prince William, one that could have risked him setting himself up for failure given the huge challenge of tackling homelessness.
The future king has been a vocal advocate for mental health and environmental issues, but his passion for supporting homelessness charities dates back to his youth. His mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales, would often take him and Prince Harry to visit organisations like Centrepoint.
Celebrating its first year anniversary on June 26, the project, which took two years to develop and is set for a five-year plan, is designed to prove that a collective effort can make homelessness ‘rare, brief, and unrepeated’.

“It is one hell of an ambitious project: to show that it’s possible to end homelessness and is something that no government has ever even approached,” Jennie Bond, the veteran former BBC Royal correspondent, told OK!. “It seems to me to be a sensible business plan: to start in six locations and, using local knowledge and collaboration, create a model that could be rolled out if successful.”
Prince William’s forward-thinking approach to tackling social issues has earned him plaudits from Jennie, even amidst the challenges posed by Kate’s health. She said: “I admire the way that William is taking a fresh and modern approach to social problems and becoming actively involved whenever he can, in spite of the pressures of Kate’s illness.”

Jennie commends William for his selective focus, remarking: “I think his strategy of concentrating on a smaller number of issues …rather than just lending his name to an impossibly large number of charities is paying dividends.”
She also highlights Prince William’s longstanding commitment to addressing homelessness, a cause close to his heart and one shared with his late mother, Princess Diana. Jennie notes: “The scourge of homelessness is something his mother made him aware of when he was just a young boy.”
Questioning the uniqueness of William’s experiences, she asks: “Which other young Prince had ever been shown what it’s like to live on the streets, been taken to visit hostels for the homeless and learned at first hand what it’s like to be down and out?”

In reflecting upon Diana’s lasting impact, Jennie acknowledges: “Diana must take much of the credit for making William into the person he is, and for his determination to make some real changes to our society. It’s brave to set yourself up for possible failure. The task is a huge one and good on William for trying to make a difference.”
Prince William has revealed his plans to educate his children about homelessness, expressing in a Sunday Times interview that he wants them to understand that “some of us need a helping hand”.
He said: “When I left this morning, one of the things I was thinking was when is the right time to bring George or Charlotte or Louis to a homeless organisation?

“I think when I can balance it with their schooling, they will definitely be exposed to it. On the school run, we talk about what we see. When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets and we’d talk about it.”
He added: “I’d say to the children, ‘Why are they there? What’s going on?’ I think it’s in all our interests, it’s the right thing to do, to expose the children, at the right stage in the right dialogue, so they have an understanding,”.
“They [will] grow up knowing that actually, do you know what, some of us are very fortunate, some of us need a little bit of a helping hand, some of us need to do a bit more where we can to help others improve their lives.”
