Iowa Star Gabbie Marshall Posts Heartfelt Message As She Leaves Sport
After finishing off her career at Iowa last month, Gabbie Marshall is saying goodbye to the game of basketball.
Marshall said her farewell to hoops in a touching Instagram post on Sunday afternoon.
“As I am nearing my last month in Iowa City ready to take on the next chapter of my life, I have had lots of time to reflect on all the incredible memories I have made, opportunities I have been given, people I have met, and friendships that will last forever because of the game of basketball,” Marshall wrote. “It has been my whole life for the past 18 years, I appreciate all the highs and lows, lessons I have learned and everything in between. Five-year-old me would be so proud of how far I have come and all that I have experienced.”
The Cincinnati native also took time to shout out the Iowa program and fanbase for the roles they have played in their life.
“Most importantly I think about the journey I have been on these last 5 years at the place where I was able to live out my dreams and accomplish so much more than I could’ve even imagined,” Marshall wrote. “Thank you Iowa and Hawkeye Nation for being my home away from home, for showing me so much love and support & for giving me the best ending to the sport that has shaped my life.”
From her first day on campus, the 5-foot-9 Marshall was an important “glue” piece for Iowa. She became a full-time starter in her second season and finished her career with 166 games played and 137 starts.
A career 39.2% shooter from three-point range, Marshall was also a shutdown defender for the Hawkeyes. She became the first player in Iowa women’s basketball history with 200 made three-pointers and 200 steals in a career and also topped 1,000 points for her career.
Marshall averaged 6.6 points, 1.7 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game for her tenure.
