When it comes to the Royal Family, they tend to prefer humorous and thoughtful gifts over expensive ones. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have continued this tradition – even after stepping down from their royal roles and relocating to the US.
In his book Spare, Prince Harry reminisces about a thoughtful gift his wife gave him during their first festive season in 2020 after stepping down from their senior roles.
He explains that Meghan spotted a Christmas tree ornament with a picture of the Queen on it in a local shop and “thought he would like it”.
He wrote: “One present was a little Christmas ornament of… the Queen! I roared. What the—? Meg had spotted it in a local store and thought I might like it.
Meghan and Harry marked Christmas 2020 with a stunning festive picture
“I held it to the light. It was Granny’s face to a T! I hung it on an eye-level branch. It made me happy to see her there.”
However, the sweet present didn’t last long as Archie – like any toddler – found the tree fascinating and pulled the decoration off. It smashed to pieces.
“But then Archie, playing around the tree, jostled the stand, shook the tree, and Granny fell. I heard a smash and turned. Pieces lay all over the floor,” Harry wrote in Spare, adding that the toddler tried to help fix the situation.
“Archie ran and grabbed a spray bottle. For some reason he thought spraying water on the broken pieces would fix it,” he wrote.
“Meg said: ‘No, Archie, no — do not spray Gan-Gan!’ I grabbed a dustpan and swept up the pieces all the while thinking: ‘This is weird.'”
Though the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their royal roles in 2020, they have continued to release official Christmas cards like King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Kate and Prince William do each year.
The couple had spent Christmas 2019 in a secluded house in Vancouver, which they decorated with an eight-foot tall Christmas tree complete with warm fairy lights and golden baubles.
