We are a few days into the new WNBA season and there has already been a ton of excitement. The league is as popular as it ever has been and fans are tuning in to watch games more than ever. Part of this is due to the influx of talent that has entered the league this season, including No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark. Clark has energized women’s basketball, and people have taken note.
While the season is still young, it’s never too early to continue power rankings. Here are new power rankings for the teams just a few games into the season.
12. Indiana Fever (Previous: 8)
Even with Clark and last year’s No. 1 overall pick, Aliyah Boston, the Fever have struggled. They are 0-3 on the season and things aren’t looking great for them so far. It may take a minute before this team wins any games but at least Clark seems like she is figuring things out in the WNBA. They have played some tough teams, but it may be a rough first season for Clark.
11. Los Angeles Sparks (Previous: 10)
The Sparks have dropped their first two games but put up a great effort against the Las Vegas Aces. They also took down the defending champions on the road, which is the only reason they are ranked at No. 11 instead of in last place. Los Angeles has quality players but they may not win a ton of games.
10. Washington Mystics (Previous: 11)
Washington has yet to win a game this season but they have also played two tough teams. Losing to the New York Liberty and Connecticut Sun can be justified but it could be a long year for Washington.
9. Seattle Storm (Previous: 3)
The Storm are the biggest fallers on this list, dropping both of their first two games. To be fair, they did lose both games to the Minnesota Lynx but Seattle will need to get back on track if they want to have a successful season.
8. Atlanta Dream (Previous: 6)
Beating the Sparks was a nice start for Atlanta, but they can’t rely solely on offense to win games. They will have to show that they can get stops on the defensive end when needed if they want to truly contend this year.
7. Phoenix Mercury (Previous: 9)
Phoenix took down Atlanta but lost to the Aces. Kahleah Copper dropped 38 points in the win, giving Phoenix another true scorer to work with this season. Of course, they still have Diana Taurasi to help lead the charge.
6. Chicago Sky (Previous: 12)
Chicago makes the biggest jump here, even though it’s only been a few games for them. They have looked much better without Kamilla Cardoso than expected but Angel Reese is a star in the making. If she can continue her strong start, the Sky will be just fine going forward.
5. Minnesota Lynx (Previous: 7)
Minnesota could be better than expected and possibly a sleeper this season. They beat Seattle twice in impressive fashion but will have some challenges toward the end of the month. This team has to play some of the better teams in the league, which will give us a better understanding of how to rate them.
4. Dallas Wings (Previous: 5)
Dallas split two games with the Sky to start the year but they looked like a cohesive unit. They have some building blocks for the future, and this year will be a test to see how much growth they can accomplish.
3. Connecticut Sun (Previous: 4)
Connecticut looks more formidable than last season, which should scare the rest of the teams. They got an inside presence back with Brionna Jones’ return to the court from injury. Don’t sleep on the Sun this season otherwise, you may be blinded by how bright they can shine.
2. New York Liberty (Previous: 2)
The Liberty looks like a team ready to get some redemption after a heartbreaking loss in the WNBA Finals a year ago. If things continue this way, we could be on course for another New York and Las Vegas matchup.
1. Las Vegas Aces (Previous: 1)
The Aces look like a true machine early on again this season and it’s going to take a lot for them to fall in their quest for a three-peat. Until someone knocks them off, they are the favorites, and rightfully so.
