All attention is currently focused on Cameron Brink, a standout in women’s college basketball, especially following her recent injury during a game against Oregon on January 19th. With March Madness in full swing, Brink’s name is poised to be front and center in game coverage.
During her three-year tenure at Stanford University, Brink has amassed a plethora of awards and championships for her team. Her impact on the court has been undeniable since her introduction to the Stanford squad.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Brink has secured significant brand deals with major companies like New Balance and Buick, solidifying her position as a rising star in sports marketing. Additionally, her close relationship with Golden State Warriors player Steph Curry adds to her allure, as she affectionately refers to him as her ‘brother.’
Here’s a comprehensive look at one of the most promising newcomers in women’s basketball today.
She sustained a recent leg injury during a game.
During the game against Oregon, the Stanford player injured her left leg in the first quarter, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. Cameron faced difficulty getting back on her feet and required assistance from her teammates to transition from the court to the bench. Despite icing her knee and calf throughout the second half, she did not rejoin the game. Additionally, she remained sidelined during Sunday’s game against Oregon State.
As of now, Cameron has not issued any statements regarding her injury.
New Jersey girl
According to USA Basketball, Cameron was born in Princeton, New Jersey, but spent her formative years in Beaverton, Oregon. She actively participated in basketball during her high school years and was recognized as the USA TODAY Oregon Player of the Year, as reported by Stanford.
Oregon and UConn want her so bad
Following her successful high school career in Oregon, Cameron garnered attention from numerous colleges. The Oregonian reported that she received offers from prestigious institutions such as the University of Connecticut, Stanford University, and the University of Oregon.
Senior Stanford girl
When it was decision time for her college basketball career, Cameron ultimately chose Stanford, where she is currently pursuing a major in communications. Speaking to The Oregonian, Cameron revealed that Stanford had been her dream school ever since attending a basketball camp there during the summer after her seventh grade year. “Stanford has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember,” she expressed to the newspaper. “I couldn’t see myself anywhere else.” As she embarks on her senior season, the forward appears poised to make a significant impact, eyeing both accolades and victories.
Steph Curry’s mother serves as Cameron’s godmother.
Cameron Brink’s godparents are Dell and Sonya Curry, who are renowned as the parents of NBA legend Steph Curry, as reported by The Oregonian. The close bond between their families originated during their time at Virginia Tech, where Cameron’s mother, Michelle Bain-Brink, and Sonya were roommates. The connection deepened over the years, with Cameron’s parents, Greg and Michelle, developing a lasting friendship with Dell and Sonya, who were themselves basketball teammates at the university. Notably, Dell and Sonya went on to raise future NBA stars Stephen Curry and Seth Curry.
Cameron holds a special place in the Curry family as their goddaughter, and she spent considerable time with them while growing up. This close relationship has led to Stephen Curry attending multiple Stanford women’s basketball games where Cameron was playing, showing support for her as she competes on the court.
She calls Steph Curry her “brother.”
Cameron says Steph Curry is like family to her. “He’s like my brother basically, so it’s just like seeing a family member you’ve known forever and someone you would run around with and goof off with, and then all of a sudden you see him on the cover of cereal boxes,” she told the newspaper.
She added: “It’s crazy because he’s such a normal person in your life, and thousands and thousands of people look up to him.”
Steph Curry has also publicly acknowledged Cameron, praising her dedication and hard work leading up to her NCAA debut in 2021. He reminisced about a time when he and his father offered Cameron advice on her jump shot during her childhood.
“I know she’s going to keep getting better,” Steph said at a press conference. “I honestly don’t need to tell her much now; she’s just kind of off and running. It’s been awesome to watch and see.”
