Despite being selected with the No. 7 overall pick in the WNBA draft by the Chicago Sky, Angel Reese remains grounded, acknowledging that her roster spot is far from guaranteed. In a Wednesday news conference, the former LSU women’s basketball star emphasized her determination to earn her place on the team during preseason training camp, which commences Sunday.
Reese expressed humility and realism about the competitive nature of the league, stating, “Oh no, there’s always a concern. Nobody’s guaranteed.” She emphasized the uncertainty surrounding WNBA roster spots, where only a limited number of positions are available across the league’s 12 franchises, often leading to tough decisions for teams.
While Reese’s draft status may offer some reassurance, she understands the need to compete for playing time within Coach Teresa Weatherspoon’s rotation, especially considering the formidable frontcourt competition. With seven frontcourt players among the 14 listed on the Sky’s training camp roster, Reese recognizes the challenge ahead.
Acknowledging the presence of experienced veterans on the team, Reese expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside her teammates. She also highlighted her excitement to play alongside former South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso, selected by the Sky with the No. 3 overall pick, with whom she shares a competitive rivalry from previous matchups.
With the season opener against the Dallas Wings looming on May 15, Reese remains focused on proving herself and earning her spot on the team. As she navigates the challenges of preseason training camp under the leadership of Coach Weatherspoon, Reese is determined to seize every opportunity to showcase her talent and contribute to the Sky’s success in the upcoming season.
