In her first game as a pro, Clark and the Fever fell short to the Connecticut Sun 92-71 in a sold out crowd at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
In the loss, Clark led her team in scoring with 20 points, which also tied a game-high by any player. She made four three pointers, shot 5-15 from the field including 4-11 from three, and added three assists.
Though she led her team in scoring, Clark got welcomed to the WNBA with a rough first half and ended the night committing 10 turnovers, which was a WNBA record in a debut. She also committed four personal fouls.
Clark said one big difference she noticed early on was the difference of the physicality between the WNBA and college basketball. She struggled early on as veteran Dijoani Carrington and company played smothering defense on the rookie.
“I thought it was physical,” Clark said. “It wasn’t the best start in the first half, getting into foul trouble and then you got to sit on the bench and try to get back into the game and get into a little bit of a flow.”
Things started rough for the rookie. To begin her WNBA debut, Clark was held scoreless in the first quarter while committing two fouls, and went to the bench early on. She also committed five turnovers in the first half, which was three more than any other player.
Clark’s first points came on a fast-break steal as she scored a layup with 5:24 left in the second quarter. She hit her first career three pointer in the final minute of the quarter, heading into the second half with seven points. She shot 2-7 from the field in the first half as the Sun led the Fever 48-39 at halftime.
Clark would score 13 of her 20 points in the second half, but the Fever would never let go of their lead.
Led by a well-balanced attack from DeWanna Bonner (20 points), Alyssa Thomas (13 points, 13 assists, 10 rebounds), DiJonai Carrington (16 points), and Tyasha Harris (16 points), the Sun reminded the world that they’re one of the top teams in the WNBA with their 21-point victory while improving to 1-0.
Heading into her WNBA debut, Clark said she didn’t feel much pressure. After playing in her first professional l game, she said she feels like a little weight has been lifted off of her shoulders, and there’s a lot she can learn from as a young player.
“Yeah, I mean, I think I would have enjoyed to play better, all of us would have enjoyed to play better, we would have all loved to win,” Clark said. “I didn’t feel much pressure coming into this game, I was just trying to just do whatever I can to help my team and to help us win and like I said, you just go back to the drawing board, learn from it and we’re excited to play on Thursday.”
The Fever will look for their first win of the season against the New York Liberty this Thursday. Indiana will play their home-opener with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
