San Antonio Spurs’ rookie standout, Victor Wembanyama, hinted this week that some players have reached out to him, expressing interest in joining the Spurs.
In a conversation with Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, when asked if his performance and potential had caught the attention of other NBA players, Wembanyama confirmed, “Yeah, I’ve received some messages. Even from prospects. But I try to sustain my role. It’s a whole new world that I’m eager to discover. For sure, one day or the other, I’ll have to be involved in this, I guess, even though I’m staying in my role as a player.”
Despite the Spurs finishing with the second-worst record in the Western Conference this season at 22-60, Wembanyama lived up to expectations after being selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, indicating a potential turnaround for the team.
The 7’4″ French big man showcased his dominance as a rookie, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.8 three-pointers made, 1.2 steals, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game.
While Wembanyama has room to enhance his efficiency, shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 32.5 percent from three-point range, along with 3.7 turnovers per game, experience is likely to aid his development.
Despite Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert being the frontrunner, Wembanyama is a notable candidate for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, a rarity for rookies. Winning the award would make him the youngest recipient at just 20 years old.
Although the Spurs possess talent around Wembanyama, such as Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, Zach Collins, and Tre Jones, they lack secondary and tertiary stars.
In today’s NBA, championship contention typically requires multiple All-Stars, indicating the need for the Spurs to be proactive in trades or free agency.
Fortunately, they can offer an enticing situation to potential recruits: playing alongside Wembanyama.
The prospect of teaming up with Wembanyama excites point guards for pick-and-roll opportunities and three-point specialists anticipating open shots due to Wemby’s defensive attention.
While immediate playoff contention may pose challenges in the competitive Western Conference, Wembanyama’s unique abilities could give the Spurs an edge.
If the Spurs can capitalize on Wembanyama’s talent to acquire All-Star additions in the coming years, a resurgence of Spurs basketball seems inevitable.
