Pam Huff, longtime anchor at ABC 33/40 and a 47-year news veteran of television news in Birmingham, is retiring in May.
Huff made the announcement during ABC 33/40′s 5 p.m. newscast.
According to her bio, Huff was the first female to anchor a nightly newscast at an Alabama television station.
“I have spent 50 years working as a journalist — 47 of those years right here in Birmingham — talking to you, telling you about your community and your world,” Huff said during her announcement Wednesday.
“You gave a 24-year-old woman a chance in what was then a man’s profession,” she continued. You allowed me to be pregnant and stay on the air — and that was a first for this television market.”
“There is no adequate way to say ‘thank you,’ because without you I would not have made it all these decades in the news business. But now, however, it is time to step back and to allow the next generation of journalists to get to experience what I have loved for so long.”
In 2022, Huff announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her battle, ABC 33/40 cameras followed her as she tried on wigs while undergoing chemotherapy.
Huff beat cancer, and in her retirement announcement, thanked viewed for offering “words of encouragement.”
Her retirement is effective May 24.
