Caitlin Clark made her return to the court following a troubling injury episode, yet her Indiana Fever fell short in a gripping 88-84 battle against the Connecticut Sun.
During the second quarter, Clark twisted her left ankle. Despite Clark’s absence for the final 5:32 of the half, the Fever managed to lead 44-41 at halftime. Clark reappeared in the third quarter and contributed to the Fever’s effort to come back from a nine-point deficit in the second half. However, the Sun capitalized on numerous errors made by Clark towards the end, securing the victory.

Clark concluded the game with 17 points, five assists, and five turnovers, still seeking her first WNBA win since being drafted first overall in April. She shot 5 of 11 from the field and 3 of 7 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Sun improved to 3-0 thanks to standout performances from DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas, who led all scorers with 24 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists, shooting 8 of 14 from the field.

Clark’s Return After Ankle Injury

Clark exited the game midway through the second quarter following what appeared to be an ankle injury. While defending, she twisted her left ankle and fell to the ground, immediately clutching her ankle in pain.
She then limped off to the sideline and headed to the Fever locker room accompanied by a trainer.

Clark returned to the bench before halftime, with no sign of a limp. Although she didn’t re-enter the game before halftime, she sat on the sideline, stretching her ankle with a band. Before her injury, she had scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds, and committed two turnovers, shooting 2 of 6 from the field.

Fever’s Fightback After Sun’s Nine-Point Lead

She rejoined the lineup at the start of the third quarter. The Sun began the second half with a 19-7 run, turning their three-point halftime deficit into a 60-51 lead. However, the Fever reduced the deficit to 64-61 by the end of the third quarter and reclaimed the lead at 65-64 early in the fourth.

After being without an assist in the first three quarters, Clark assisted on three consecutive fourth-quarter baskets as the Fever launched their comeback. Then, with 7:16 left, she drained a deep 3-pointer to regain the lead at 70-68.

Late Errors by Clark Haunt Fever

However, turnovers continued to trouble Clark, who has faced challenges with ball control early in her WNBA career. She turned the ball over on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter, with Thomas stealing it both times. On the second steal, Clark committed a transition foul, followed by a technical foul for disputing with officials.
Clark then received her fifth personal foul during a Tyasha Harris and-1 play, which Harris converted to give the Sun a 79-76 lead.

The Fever managed to tie the game one last time at 84-84 with a Clark assist that set up an Aliyah Boston jumper with 29 seconds remaining. Yet, the Sun regained the lead for good with a pair of free throws by Harris with 11.3 seconds left.

Bonner contributed 22 points, being one of four Sun starters to reach double figures. Connecticut dominated at the free-throw line, converting 24 of 30 attempts, compared to Indiana’s 12-of-13 effort. Additionally, the Sun outperformed the Fever with a 17-8 turnover margin, compensating for their poor 3-point shooting night (21.1%).

Despite five Fever players scoring in double figures and shooting 47.8% from the field, they couldn’t overcome their turnovers and the free-throw line discrepancy. Boston managed 10 points and eight rebounds but struggled with ball control alongside Clark, accumulating a game-high six turnovers. Clark will have another opportunity to secure her first WNBA victory when the Fever face the Seattle Storm on Wednesday.
