With the Clippers’ elimination on Friday against the Dallas Mavericks, yet another disappointing playoff outing ended for the LA franchise. As soon as the Mavs vanquished the Clippers, the tabloids came alive with numerous speculations.
With rumors about the future of Tyronn Lue, James Harden and Paul George going rampant, Russell Westbrook was also not spared from the speculations. Westbrook took to social media to clear the air surrounding his future and posted a lengthy story, claiming that the rumors about his Clippers exit “has likely been fabricated.”
The point guard also highlighted his commitment to the Clippers’ cause and pointed out the “certain sacrifices” he had to make for the team. “I hope to come back better, stronger, and remain eager to take on any role that continues to put us in the best position to win next season,” added Westbrook to cap off his statement.
Many media sources claimed that the 2017 NBA MVP might leave for better opportunities elsewhere after the crushing loss, but Westbrook’s clarification indicates his return to the franchise next season. But bringing back a declining Russell Westbrook might not be on the priority list for the Clippers.
Russell Westbrook on Steady Decline Since Joining Clippers
Russell Westbrook in the last decade made his name for being one of the most robust guards in the game. His “head down and run” approach was unstoppable in his OKC days, but with an ageing body, he is no longer able to frequently replicate those drives.
Since joining the Clippers in February 2023, Westbrook’s numbers have only gone downwards with no indication of going up. His points per game have come down to 11.1 this season from 15.8 in his debut season. While his role off the bench can be attributed to the slump in numbers, his loss of dynamism and on-court antics have not helped his case.
Even before joining the Clippers, his numbers were sinking with each passing year. With the Lakers, his points per game came down to 15.9 from 18.5 just after a year. Tyronn Lue endorsed a more team-oriented game for the Clippers, which contradicts Russell Westbrook’s one-man show.
The numbers are clear indications of that and, despite his vehement disapproval of the ongoing rumors, it will not be of much surprise if the 9-time NBA All-Star is seen in a different color next season.
