Despite being newcomers to the Las Vegas Aces this season, Megan Gustafson and Kate Martin, both former Iowa women’s basketball standouts, had the privilege of experiencing the rewards of clinching a WNBA championship.
Accompanying their Aces teammates, the former Hawkeyes attended the team’s visit to the White House on Thursday, commemorating Las Vegas’ back-to-back titles secured last autumn.
While Gustafson briefly played for the Phoenix Mercury in 2023—while Martin was still in college—their enthusiasm for their current teammates’ achievement is evident.
“Alright Hawks, checking in from the White House!” Gustafson said in a short video with Martin posted on Instagram. “We’re excited.”
“Go Hawks!”
The Iowa interest in the Aces has understandably skyrocketed in recent weeks. On the heels of signing Gustafson in early February, Las Vegas then drafted Martin 18th overall on April 15.
Martin hasn’t officially made the Aces roster yet — teams have until May 13 to finalize their rosters — but it appears that’ll happen after she survived the latest round of cuts.
Former Iowa State star Ashley Joens, who played for the Aces during their WNBA championship season, also was part of the group that visited the White House.
