Former Iowa Hawkeyes teammates Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin are having two different experiences in their WNBA rookie seasons. Clark, who was drafted No. 1 overall by the Indiana Fever, has become the most talked-about player in the league, and expectations are higher than any rookie we’ve ever seen.

Martin, on the other hand, was selected in the second round by the Las Vegas Aces. She came into the WNBA with no expectations and has proven herself a valuable asset to the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces.

On Monday, Martin and Clark both spoke to USA Today Sports about their new WNBA lives, and Martin gave an emotional take on her best friend that will move WNBA fans.

“It’s so rare in this league for two people from the same team to both make it unless you go to UConn or South Carolina or something; there’s so many of them in the league. It’s really nice to have one of your best friends going through a similar experience,” Martin said.

Clark and Martin spent four years together at Iowa. They helped lead their team to two straight NCAAW National Championship appearances but failed to win in both.

Martin continued, “She knows exactly what I mean every time I say something; it’s hard to talk to other friends about it (the WNBA) because they just don’t understand our jobs. I never would have thought I’d be in this position. I always knew Caitlin was going to change the world, but I’m super grateful to be here, too.”

Clark and the Fever will face Martin and the Aces for the second time this season on Tuesday, July 2, at 9:30 PM ET. Martin took round one over Clark by a final score of 99-80.
