Renowned American director Steven Soderbergh has revealed his fascination with Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, noting that it is inspiring his next creative venture. Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Soderbergh shared his admiration for Swift’s groundbreaking approach to her performances and the impressive control she maintains over her work.

“People laugh that there is a college class being taught about her, and I go, ‘There should be,’” Soderbergh told Variety. “What she is doing, the way she is doing it… Nobody has ever done this before. The amount of control she has taken over. She is relentless.”

Soderbergh was particularly struck by Swift’s dedication, exemplified by stories of her practicing entire shows on a treadmill to ensure flawless performance. “It’s a success story, and I am fascinated by that. [Screenwriter] David Koepp took his daughter to see the show and said, ‘You cannot believe what it’s like to be there.’ I would go if I could. There aren’t any tickets! But I watched the film.”

This admiration has seeped into Soderbergh’s creative process, influencing his thoughts on future projects. He’s contemplating a project that examines large-scale cooperative endeavors, like airports or Alcoholics Anonymous, and how they function effectively. He sees parallels between these systems and the seamless execution of Swift’s tour, prompting him to ask, “So why can’t we figure out Syria or any other conflict?”

Soderbergh believes that humor and music are powerful tools for storytelling and engagement. “Humor is a great delivery system for an idea, and nothing lights up the brain like music, so this project better be funny, and there should be some musical component as a way to open people up. I want you to come out on the other side after you see it, and feel different.”

While Soderbergh is still in the conceptual phase of this new project, fans can look forward to his upcoming movie, “Black Bag,” which he describes as a love story.

Soderbergh’s interest in Swift’s Eras Tour highlights the profound impact of her work beyond music, extending into the realms of inspiration for filmmakers and storytellers. As Soderbergh continues to explore new creative avenues, it’s clear that Swift’s relentless dedication and innovative spirit are leaving an indelible mark on diverse fields of art and culture.
