Prince Harry and Meghan Markle embarked on a three-day tour of Nigeria earlier this month, where they were greeted as ‘royalty’ by locals – and the couple’s royal-like tours could continue
A Royal expert has suggested that despite the Royal Family’s potential reservations, they may not have the power to halt Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from undertaking further unofficial overseas tours. Yet, they could put a spanner in the works, at least, with administrative interference.
This comes after the Sussexes’ recent jaunt to Nigeria, which appeared remarkably like a full-scale Royal tour featuring school visits, military parade reviews, and promotional activity for the Invictus Games.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued these sort of engagements in spite of their official withdrawal from Royal duties last year and subsequent relocation to the United States. They’ve been raking it in via private ventures, including Harry’s upcoming memoir ‘Spare’, and have also branched out into television with their own Netflix series, according to an Express report.
Tom Sykes, Royal editor for The Daily Beast, offered his perspective on the situation: “Everywhere they went in Nigeria they were greeted as royalty. The royals can’t stop them doing more tours, but the government might seek to apply serious diplomatic pressure on friendly states not to host these quasi-royal tours.”
The western African nation’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Muse, extended an invitation to Harry and Meghan, lobbying for Nigeria to host a future iteration of the Invictus Games. The pair seemed to be heartily welcomed by Nigerians during their visit and made the most of the opportunity to interact with local people.

Critics have suggested that Harry and Meghan’s international trips are primarily aimed at promoting their own projects, contrasting with traditional Royal tours which are largely ceremonial and intended to strengthen international relations.
Harry and Meghan’s visit to Nigeria was so successful that it has sparked interest from Ghanaian officials for a similar visit.
An insider told The Mirror: “There is already a lot of talk and excitement in Ghana, everyone is so keen for Harry and Meghan to come and experience the great culture and warmth. Several top names have already visited Ghana in recent years from Ed Sheeran, Naomi Campbell and One Direction’s Liam Payne. Idris Elba, who DJ’d at Harry and Meghan’s wedding is a regular too, he is part-Ghanaian and loves spending time ‘back home.'”.
